The Fairmont Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 first-period lead and went on to defeat visiting Worthington 7-1 in a Section 3A boys hockey tournament game Tuesday night.
Fairmont, the tourney's No. 7 seed, got two goals within the first 47 seconds of the contest, and the Cardinals' Gavin Kester — the team's leading scorer during the regular season — had a hat trick in the first period.
Fairmont tacked on two more goals in the second period for a 6-0 advantage. The Trojans got on the board when Noahh Hohenstein scored with 5:27 gone by in the third -- with assists credited to Dominic Pavelko and Lucas Hohenstein — to make it 6-1, but WHS would draw no closer.
