Fairmont, Luverne wins Region 13C playoff openers

The second-seeded Jackson Bulls managed four hits as they were shut out 5-0 by the visiting No. 3-seed Fairmont Martins in game of their best-of-three Region 13C amateur baseball playoff series on Wednesday night.

Fairmont took a 1-0 edge in the top of the first inning, and the Bulls had a great opportunity to get even at minimum in the bottom of the frame. Easton Bahr’s single and Andy Wolf’s walk put runners on first and second with no outs, but Jackson ended coming up empty in the runs department.

The Martins, who now have a record of 15-3, got three more runs in the third and another in the eighth to complete their scoring. Jackson, which is now 14-4, had two base hits apiece from Bahr and Wolf. Evan Olesen tossed the first seven-plus innings on the mound and took the pitching loss.

Game two is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Fairmont. Game three, if necessary, would take place Sunday in Jackson.

In the other Region 13C amateur baseball playoff series, the top-seeded Luverne Redbirds improved to 15-2 this summer by posting a 5-2 triumph over No. 5 Windom. Luverne will play at Windom, which has record of 13-6, at 2 p.m. Saturday in game two. If necessary, game three will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Luverne.

The winner of both playoff series qualifies for state and will play next week for the Region 13C championship. The losers of both series will play next week for the region’s third and final spot at state.
