Eagles soar past Trojans in second half in girls hoops win

Southwest Minnesota Christian’s girls basketball team played an outstanding second half Tuesday night and defeated the Worthington Trojans 74-48 in the WHS gym.

The Class A Eagles led 31-30 over the Class 3A Trojans at the half and then went on to outscore Worthington 43-18 in the second half to improve to 21-2 on the season. Southwest Minnesota Christian will face Westbrook-Walnut Grove, which has lost just three times this winter, on Thursday.

Tuesday’s game started slowly for both teams, but the Eagles and Trojans each started finding the bucket over the final nine minutes or so of the first half. With the game tied at 28 apiece, the Eagles’ Myah Vander Maten buried a 3-pointer with under 10 seconds left before the break. New Gora then answered at the buzzer for the Trojans on an inbounds pass from Grace Barber underneath the Southwest Minnesota Christian basket.

Madyson Fey had back-to-back 3s early in the second half as the Eagles went up 50-39, forcing a WHS timeout. That didn’t stop the surge, though, as Southwest Minnesota Christian continued to grow its advantage the rest of the way.

Fey finished with 23 points for the Eagles, while Ana Veldkamp had 20 and Jocelyn Barron added 13. For the Trojans, now 5-17, Pham Gora had 11 points, New Gora 10 and Madison Beckmann nine.
