Fourth-seeded Underwood was able to pull away from fifth-seeded Southwest Minnesota Christian in the second half Thursday and go on to claim a 64-52 victory over the Eagles in a quarterfinal round game at the Minnesota State Class A girls basketball tournament at Maturi Pavilion.
Underwood led Southwest Minnesota Christian 26-23 at halftime and was able to grow that edge over the final 18 minutes. The loss dropped the Eagles into the consolation bracket; they were scheduled to take on Mayer Lutheran at 10 a.m. Friday at the Gangelhoff Center. Underwood, meanwhile, now has a semifinal matchup Friday against top-seeded Goodhue at noon.
Southwest Minnesota Christian’s Jocelyn Barron led all players in Thursday’s game with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Ana Veldkamp chipped in with 10 points and Makenzie Pap had 10 rebounds for the Eagles, who are now 28-3.
In the Section 3AA boys basketball final Thursday night, Jackson County Central defeated Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta 67-52 at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall to advance to next week’s state boys hoops tourney. It’s the fourth time in school history that the Huskies have qualified for state in boys basketball.
In the Section 2A boys basketball final at Minnesota State, Mankato, Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey edged Lester Prairie 57-55 in overtime to advance to state.
