Worthington High School graduate Andrew Benson and the Dordt Defenders were unable to recover from a second-period deficit as they dropped a 3-1 decision to Calvin in American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III play on Friday night at the national tournament hosted in St. Louis, Missouri.
The Defenders responded quickly in the third period, needing just 40 seconds to pull even when Rylan Veenstra finished off an assist from Tegan Doelman to make it 1-1. The momentum was short-lived as Calvin answered with back-to-back goals over a two-minute stretch. The go-ahead goal came at 7:47, followed by an insurance tally at 9:41, pushing the Knights ahead 3-1.
Dordt finishes the season — Benson's senior year — with a 28-5 record and qualified for the national tournament for the second consecutive time.
