CUPs for cannabis stores to be considered Monday by council

Three separate conditional use permits for cannabis dispensaries will be considered during Monday’s Worthington City Council meeting. All three had received recommendations for approval during this past week’s Worthington Planning Commission meeting.

Kirk Kruse has requested a conditional use permit to allow for the operation of a cannabis dispensary – or, cannabis retail store -- at 1015 Third Ave. (located inside the Hotel Thompson). Three existing business spaces (1011, 1013, and 1015 Third Ave.) would be combined into one larger retail space.

The planning commission voted 3-2 last week to recommend approval of the CUP. One dissenting vote stemmed from concern with the residential spaces above the unit, and the other dissenting vote came from concerns with the cannabis industry in general.

Jason Axelson has also requested a conditional use permit to allow for the operation of a cannabis dispensary at 341 Oxford St. (the end unit of a three-unit building). Additionally, Red Wood Season LLC has requested a conditional use permit to allow for the operation of a cannabis dispensary at 1151 Ryan’s Road. The planning commission voted 4-1 to recommend approval of each of the CUPs, with the lone “no” vote each time coming as a result of cannabis industry concerns.
