Cubs pick up Wednesday win with home shutout over Milroy Irish

The Worthington Cubs amateur baseball team evened its overall season record at 7-7 by earning a 2-0 victory at home over the Milroy Irish on Wednesday night.
Jake Brandner threw a complete-game shutout for the Cubs, allowing six hits while walking one and striking out seven over nine innings. Worthington was a winner despite getting just two hits on the night. Tucker Brandner had a double and McKinley Bush a single; Jake Brandner and Daniel Castro had RBIs.
The Cubs were scheduled to be back in action Thursday night at Worthington Middle School field for a makeup matchup against Fairmont. After that, they round out their regular season with a Sunday contest in Hadley.
The most recent amateur baseball standings for area leagues have Windom and Milroy leading the way.
In the First Nite League, the Pirates are perched atop first place with a league record of 12-1 and overall mark of 14-1. The Fairmont Martins have played just eight games but have a record of 7-1 — all in league action.
Completing the First Nite standings, the Jackson Bulls are 8-5 and 9-7, the Lakefield Frogs are 4-9 and 4-9 and the Heron Lake Lakers are 1-12 and 1-14.
Milroy's Irish have a league mark of 8-4 and overall record of 9-8 to lead the Gopher League. The Luverne Redbirds are 7-5 and 7-6, the Hadley Buttermakers are 7-6 and 7-7, the Pipestone A's are 6-7 and 8-9 and Worthington is 5-7 and 7-7.
