Cardinals drop second game at girls hockey tourney

The Luverne Cardinals got a pair of goals from Kamyrn Van Batavia Thursday afternoon, but Luverne was eliminated from the Minnesota State Class A Girls Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the River Lakes Stars.

Abby Storms and Sophia Hess both scored for River Lakes in the first period to give the Stars a 2-0 advantage. Van Batavia then netted her 80th goal of the season at 5:11 of the second period on passes from Reghan Bork and Mallory VonTersch to make it 2-1. River Lakes' Kianna Roeske, however, scored twice before the second period was out to help the Stars to a three-goal edge.

Van Batavia again scored at 5:05 of the third period on an assist from Payton Behr to trim the deficit to two goals, but the Cardinals could get no closer.

Both goalies -- River Lakes' Kaydence Roeske and Luverne's Cheyenne Schutz -- made 34 saves each. The Cardinals, who made their third straight state tournament appearance -- finished the season with a record of 23-5.
