Bluejays sweep Saturday baseball doubleheader

The Minnesota West Bluejay baseball squad swept a home doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Minnesota State of Fergus Falls, capturing the opener 9-2 and then taking the nightcap 16-5.

In the first game of the day, 2023 Worthington High School graduate Triston Sauerbrei starred on the mound, as he ended up pitching a complete-game four-hitter. Sauerbrei walked five and struck out five while surrendering just one earned run.

At the plate, Haruta Endo doubled and homered and drove in four runs in the opener. Joe Zhu and Axell Espino also contributed two hits apiece as the Bluejays broke a 2-2 deadlock by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In game two, Zhu doubled and homered and collected four hits in all and four RBIs while also scoring three times. Corwin Laurence also had four hits and four RBIs, and Espino had a four-hit day of his own as well. Robert Reyes had three hits to go along with four more RBIs and Daniel Castro had a home run for the Bluejays, who led by just 6-5 going into to the bottom of the sixth before scoring 10 times.

Minnesota West, which improved to 5-11 overall on the season, plays a doubleheader at St. Cloud Tech on Wednesday.

The Minnesota West softball team won the opening game of its season on Friday and then lost a pair of games on Saturday.

 

Playing in Rochester, the Lady Jays got their spring off to a triumphant start by edging Minnesota North College-Vermillion 6-5 on Friday. It was shortstop Makenzie Allen leading the way, going 3-for-4 in the game with a single, double and home run. Allen scored three times in the contest and also drove in three runs as Minnesota West scored three times in the top of the seventh to pull out the victory.

 

Keytin Elser, who started at third base for the Lady Jays, connected for a single, double and triple at the plate while adding three RBIs. Erika Rice contributed a double, and Alayna Wingate had a hit and scored twice while also earning the pitching win, striking out 11 while walking none.

 

On Saturday, Minnesota West lost its first of two games on the day to Minnesota North College-Rainy River 19-4. Elser singled and doubled and drove in two runs, Wingate homered and Allen contributed a double.

 

Later Saturday, the Lady Jays were defeated by Central Lakes 10-4. Allen and Sondra Rindfleisch each had a single and double in that ballgame. Rice drove in three runs, while Allen and Wingate each scored twice.

 

Minnesota West is scheduled to host Rochester in a doubleheader Tuesday.
