Bluejays get hoops sweep; Byrne wins again on mat; Trojans second at JCC gymnastics tourney

In men's basketball Sunday afternoon, Zackery Rygg connected for 31 points to help boost Minnesota West to an 80-78 victory over St. Cloud Tech at the Center for Health & Wellness.


Rygg made 8-of-14 field goal attempts overall — including five-of-eight from 3-point range — while also going 10-for-12 on free throws. Also scoring in double figures for the Bluejays — now 15-4 overall and 2-2 in MCAC play — were Calvin Flood and Keion Irvin, who both had 12 points apiece. Deondre Wallace pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds to go with team highs of five assists and five steals.


The Bluejays had a big advantage at the free throw line, sinking 23 free throws compared to 12 for St. Cloud Tech.


In the women's basketball matchup that preceded the men, the Minnesota West Lady Jays improved to 3-0 in conference play and 11-7 overall with a 76-54 triumph over St. Cloud Tech.


The Minnesota West women are ranked No. 3 in the nation and will take on No. 1 Rochester at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Center for Health and Wellness. A men's contest between the 15th-ranked Bluejays and Yellow Jackets will follow. Catch all the action on 104.3 La Voz.

The Worthington Trojans wrestling team finished eighth out of 13 squads at the Wabasso Invitational.


For the Trojans, Chase Bryne once again came away with top honors by placing first place at 189 pounds. Other individual placers for Worthington were: Sam Dagel, third at 107; Kian Ling, third at 121; Dalton Larson, fourth at 152; Dominic Larson, fifth at 114; Brayden Raymo, fifth at 172.


In girls wrestling, Hosanna Taw of Worthington was fourth at 100 pounds, teammate Peer Htoo was third at 106-112, and Trojan Naw Rebekah Htoo was fourth at 118-124.

The Worthington Trojans gymnastics team placed second among six teams Saturday at the Jackson County Central Sweetheart Invitational Meet. The Trojans had 139.65 points; New Prague was first with 148.425.


Brooklyn Dykstra was the top placer for Worthington in the all-around, taking fourth, while teammate Jordis Weber placed fifth. Jayda Milbrath was good enough for fourth place in the beam, with Weber right behind her in fifth. Dykstra was sixth on the bars and eighth on the floor, Kenadie Thiner sixth on the beam, and Milbrath seventh on the bars for the Trojans.

In high school hockey Saturday, Worthington hosted a girls/boys doubleheader against Minnesota River. The Trojans lost 8-0 in the girls game as they were outshot 44-7. In boys action, Minnesota River topped WHS 9-1.

In girls basketball, host Worthington was defeated by Fairmont 78-36. In boys hoops, the Trojans played at Fairmont. They were tied 35-35 at the half, but the Cardinals wound up with a 65-48 victory.
