Area wrestlers excel at Big South meet; Lady Jays now ranked third

Thirteen teams participated in the Big South Conference Wrestling Tournament on Friday in Jackson, with Marshall capturing top team honors with 236.5 points. Among area teams, Jackson County Central placed fourth, Pipestone Area fifth, Fairmont-Martin County West sixth, Windom-Mountain Lake eighth, Worthington ninth and Luverne 11th.  

 

Individual champions from the conference tourney included six from Marshall, who were: Lincoln Christenson at 107 pounds; Landon Marthaler at 121; Dylan Louwagie at 133; Brayden Chandler at 152; Tate Condezo at 160; and Tucker Fiene at 172; Miklo Hernandez at 114, Brayden Burmeister at 127 and Jackson Melcher at 189 were all champions for Pipestone Area, and Nolan Ambrose of Jackson County Central won at 139.

 

The Worthington Trojans, meanwhile, had five individual wrestlers place at the meet. They were: Dalton Larson, fourth at 133 pounds; Josiah Banegas, fifth at 152; Levi Hennings, fifth at 189; and Alex Galvez, sixth at 127.

The Minnesota West Lady Jays moved up one spot to No. 3 in the NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Poll released Monday. 

 

The Lady Jays, 17-7 overall, switched positions with Anoka-Ramsey, which is now No .4, after Minnesota West beat them 73-52 on Saturday. Minnesota rivals Rochester and Northland remain the first- and second-ranked teams, respectively.
