A-E wins season girls basketball opener, Trojans defeated

Katie Buntjer scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as Adrian-Ellsworth opened its season with a 53-33 victory over Springfield on Saturday at Minnesota West in Worthington.


Sadie Krahling added 11 points and Katelyn Frodermann contributed nine points and 10 points for the Dragons in their win. Brooklyn Sturm had team highs of seven points and 12 rebounds for Springfield.

Also Saturday at Minnesota West, sophomore guard Haidyn Sammons had a game-best 19 points, Hannah Dauer scored 14 points and Hadley Sammons passed for 12 assists as Windom defeated Worthington 66-51 in both teams’ season opener. The Eagles led by seven at the half and ultimately stretched their advantage to 24 at one point. Madison Beckmann paced the Trojans with 17 points and eight rebounds, New Gora added 12 points and Pam Gora had a team-leading nine rebounds.

In a women’s basketball matchup that followed the Eagles-Trojans game, it was the Minnesota West Lady Jays getting past the Bethany Lutheran JV 89-80. The win was the fourth in a row for the Lady Jays, who are now 6-2.


Olivia Hayenga poured in 41 points for Minnesota West while adding 12 rebounds and four assists. Hattie DeVries contributed 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Audrey Drapeau had 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds, and Sylla Peterson had 10 points and six boards.
