A Worthington man is dead following a Monday morning crash near Sheldon.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2006 Ford Focus operated by Manuel Garcia Calachij, 17, of Worthington was westbound on U.S. near Northwest Iowa Community College west of Sheldon, and a 2016 Peterbilt semi operated by Kris Marra, 54, of Sioux Center was eastbound on U.S. 18. The Focus crossed the center line and struck the semi head-on, with the Ford ending up on the north shoulder facing northwest and the semi continuing eastbound before becoming jack-knifed across both lanes of traffic. All four occupants of the Ford were trapped; the crash was reported at about 6:20 a.m.
All four individuals were transported to Sanford Sheldon by ambulance. Samuel Garcia Ruiz, 44, died in the crash, and was not wearing a seatbelt. At last report, Garcia Calachij remained in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Two other female passengers were reportedly in serious condition.
