Worthington graduate wins election in St. Paul

Two more St. Paul City Council candidates – including a 2013 graduate of Worthington High School -- were declared unofficial winners late Friday as the city remained on a path to have an all-female city council in the next term for the first time ever.

Cheniqua Johnson grew up in Worthington and previously ran for statewide office in Minnesota House District 22B. She was declared an unofficial winner following a ballot reallocation process at the Ramsey County Elections Office. Results on election night Tuesday had both Johnson – in Ward 7 -- and Anika Bowie – in Ward 1 – with around 40 percent of first-choice votes, but that was short of the 50 percent plus one threshold needed to win outright in the ranked choice voting system.

Four other women also won election on Tuesday, and another woman leads the Ward 3 council race that is scheduled for ballot reallocation on Monday.
