WORTHINGTON – Worthington City Council member Mike Harmon died unexpectedly Thursday morning at the age of 79.
He was a Worthington resident for more than 40 years and active in the community, serving on the boards of the Center for Active Living, the Water & Light Commission, the Prairie Justice Center and more. He was formerly a member of the ISD 518 School Board, and owner of Nutri Pro Feeds.
Harmon, who has served on the city council in Ward 2 since 2015, was also the mayor pro tem for the city. He was dedicated to the betterment of the city and the people who reside in Worthington.
Along with mourning the loss of a committed civil servant, city officials are now tasked with appointing Harmon’s replacement. His current term of office was through December 2022. According to the city charter, the council will fill the vacancy by appointment, and that person will serve until the next general election, which is in November 2022.
Out of respect for Harmon and his position, the vacancy will not be addressed until later this month.
Harmon is survived by his wife, Elena; two daughters, Chris and Andi; and grandchildren.
