WHS gymnasts win season opener; Trojans boys defeated on home ice

The Worthington Trojans gymnastics team opened their season at home Tuesday with a 139.350-130.325 dual meet win over Luverne.


WHS junior Olivia Barber won the all-around with a total score of 35.575, and she also finished on top on the bars at 8.375 and the balance beam at 9.375. The Trojans’ Kelsey Soleta was first on the vault at 9.15, and Addison Gerber of WHS was the No. 1 scorer on the floor at 9.25.


Among other top placers for the Trojans were: Gerber and Soleta, second and third in the all-around; and Barber and Christy Banegas, second and third on the floor. Gerber was also third on the bars, while Banegas and Soleta were second and third on the beam.

The Worthington Trojans boys hockey team got a three-goal deficit down to within one during the second period, but Waseca scored the next four goals and went on to record a 9-4 win over the Trojans at the Worthington Ice Arena.


Easton Newman scored the first Worthington goal of the season at 6:33 of the opening period to make it a 1-1 game, but the Bluejays ended the first 17 minutes with a 3-1 edge. Waseca then made it 4-1 at 3:40 of the second period before Spenser Nickel answered for the Trojans just 40 seconds later on an assist from Kyle Ahrenstorff. Newman then scored a second time on passes from Mason Onnen and Riley Woodbury to make it 4-3 at 11:37, but Waseca had two goals within nine seconds of each other late in the period and then had two more early in the third.


Worthington’s fourth goal came from Caden Van Briesen, who scored unanassisted. Kyle Ahlshlager had four goals and Brayden Hesch-Priem two for Waseca, which outshot the Trojans 36-25. Worthington is now 0-2.
