SPORTS NEWS

As one of the top recruits in the country it should come as no surprise that one of three finalists for the 2020-21 Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year is Minnehaha Academy 7-footer Chet Holmgren.

The 5-star recruit from Minneapolis was named a finalist Friday, along with Jabari Smith of Georgia and Donovan Clingan, of Connecticut. Holmgren is bound for Gonzaga while Smith is head to Auburn. Clingan is a junior and a top-50 recruit in the Class of 2022.

Holmgren is a 5-star recruit, according to 247 Sports, and the No. 1 player in the nation in the senior Class of 2021. He's also the second straight Minnehaha Academy standout to go to Gonzaga, joining Jalen Suggs.

Holmgren was recently named Minnesota's Mr. Basketball winner after leading Minnehaha Academy to a Class 3A state championship. He averaged 21 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.

Suggs, who also won the Mr. Basketball Award, led Gonzaga to the national championship game as a freshman and is now likely going to be a top-five pick in this summer's NBA Draft.

The top-seeded Mankato West high school baseball team defeated Worthington 10-0 in five innings Wednesday night in the first round of the Section 2AAA tournament.

In a matchup of No. 1 and No. 8 in the eight-team section tournament field, Mankato West scored eight runs in the fifth inning en route to its victory. Pitcher Tanner Shumski fired a three-hitter at the Trojans and struck out eight.

Isaiah Noble, Kent Lais and Damon Schutz had Worthington’s three hits, all singles. Nathan Van Orman pitched four and one-third innings and Schutz finished up.

In other first-round games on Wednesday, No. 2 New Ulm beat No. 7 St. Peter 8-0, No. 4 Mankato East dispatched Hutchinson 10-9 and No. 3 Marshall topped No. 6 Waconia 11-3.

On Saturday in the consolation bracket of the double-elimination tourney, Worthington will play Hutchinson at 1:30 p.m. in New Ulm. Worthington will take an 8-11 record into the game. Hutchinson is 11-10.

The winner will play again at 4 p.m. in New Ulm.

In another consolation bracket game on Saturday, St. Peter plays Waconia, also at 1:30 p.m. in New Ulm. In Saturday winner’s bracket games, Mankato West plays Mankato East at 11 a.m. in New Ulm, and New Ulm plays Marshall at 11 a.m. in New Ulm.
