Luverne, Milroy win in amateur baseball series openers

The top-seeded Luverne Redbirds rode the arm of Jake Haugen Wednesday night to a game-one victory in their Region 13C amateur baseball series with Hadley.

Haugen surrendered just two hits and two walks while striking out 12 hitters while pitching a complete game and leading the Redbirds to a 7-0 shutout win over the Buttermakers in Luverne. The Redbirds will try to close out the best-of-three series between the teams on Saturday afternoon in Hadley.

Meanwhile, at Island Park in Windom, Tucker Sorenson struck out six hitters over the last three innings as visiting Milroy edged Windom 5-4 in the first game of their three-game series. Sorenson, who played for the Adrian A’s during the regular season, was drafted by Milroy for the series with the Pirates.

The Irish will try to complete a sweep of the series on Friday night when they take take on Windom at home.

If a third game is needed for either series, it would be played on Sunday with the higher-seeded team hosting. The winner of each series will qualify for the State Class C Amateur Baseball tournament, while the loser of each will play in a series of their own for an additional berth at state.
