An initial coalition of 13 museums has announced the formation of the Lakes Area Museum Alliance.
The mission of the alliance is “to collaborate to increase visibility and attendance at all Dickinson County Museums, educate the public on the history of the area, and thereby help to not only ensure the sustainability of historical preservation but also to enhance Lakes Area tourism.” The alliance’s formation came to be with a gathering of a few museum directors sharing a common vision.
Said Clay Norris, spokesperson for the Lakes Area Museum Alliance and Executive Director of the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association: “It all started with a mutual friend getting our board president and myself connected with Angie Cook and Tim Kinnetz of the Spirit of Okoboji, as well as Mary Dreier from the Dickinson County Museum. We all quickly discovered that we had mutual goals to share the history of our county and our state, and we thought that all the area museums probably shared the same goal. Angie contacted the various museums, the response was great, and an alliance formed very quickly. It all seemed like it was meant to be.”
The brand-new Lakes Area Museum Alliance selected June 10 as a kick-off day, and 12 of the 13 participating museums will be open that day from 10 am until 4 pm. Unique exhibits will be at each museum.
