WORTHINGTON – ISD 518 will host a public meeting at 7 p.m. March 8 at West Elementary to present a plan for the Community Education Facility.
The district has struggled to find a home for their community education, especially since the collapse of an attempt at a city/county/school district building collaboration.
Community Ed is currently housed at the West Elementary site which is in tough shape.
After the WELL discussion came to a halt, the district looked into purchasing the old Shopko building, only to have the city of Worthington block their efforts, citing the potential loss of sales tax revenue as the reason.
The general consensus now is to build a new facility to the west of the Learning Center, which would house adult basic education and enrichment, NCIC, Early Childhood, a main office and staff support space. The approximate 45,000 square foot facility would come at a cost of about $17 million.
The benefit of co-locating the programs includes the ability to share certain spaces, such as conference rooms, access to the gym at the Learning Center, childcare rooms and classroom space.
During the March 8 meeting, the presentation of the plan will be followed by a question-and-answer period. The public is encouraged to attend.
