WORTHINGTON – Law enforcement is asking people to avoid downtown Worthington after a backhoe hit a natural gas line during construction on Second Street.

According to the Worthington Police Department, streets are closed from 11th to Lake and 4th to the railroad tracks. Businesses downtown were evacuated.

Captain Nate Grimmius said the sound of the escaping gas is audible, and the gas company was on scene within a short time. The odor, Grimmius said, is heavy in the downtown area.
