City of Pipestone recognized for water quality

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Minnesota Rural Water Association (MRWA) have recognized the City of Pipestone for its exceptional efforts to protect community drinking water sources. Pipestone received a 2023 Source Water Protection Award from MDH and MRWA.

Pipestone has undertaken several notable projects to protect its drinking water sources from contamination and ensure the long-term safety and sustainability of the water supply. These projects have included connecting septic systems to sewers, replacing leaking sewer lines, sealing a large diameter well and aquifer monitoring. The city also has engaged residents and raised awareness of drinking water issues through its annual Water Tower Festival and new treatment plant tours.

Pipestone also received an Aquarius Award in 2020 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of its innovative approach to addressing drinking water and wastewater issues jointly through drinking water treatment.
