Death Investigation: Travis Svalland

Wednesday afternoon at 3:38 p.m., Cottonwood County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a deceased male at 46306 County Road 3, seven miles north of Windom and about three miles west of Highway 71. The Ramsey County medical examiner has determined the victim as 43-year-old Travis Stanly Svalland of Windom.

An autopsy determined that Svalland died of homicide due to a gunshot wound.

WORTHINGTON – It may seem like it took a long time for winter to show up this year, but now that it finally has, Winterfest is right around the corner. With Winterfest comes the big medallion hunt, crowning of the Winterfest Queen, Princess and new this year, a Winterfest Prince, pond hockey, the SW MN Ice Fishing Tournament and of course, the 2016 Winterfest Chili Cook-Off.

Now in its third year, the chili cook-off is the Friday evening of Winterfest, January 22, and will be at the Worthington Event Center this year. It is the kick-off to the opening ceremonies for Winterfest, and open to anyone.

Trial: Chim LoVan

An order was filed Monday morning in Nobles County District Court continuing the jury trial of Chim LoVan, age 46, of Worthington, who is facing second- and third-degree murder charges in the death of Blue Thyboualoy. LoVan also faces two charges of first-degree manslaughter for allegedly stabbing Thyboualoy, which led to his death.

Worthington City Council approves defunding, closing Prairie View Golf Links

The Worthington City Council on Monday unanimously approved a motion to discontinue the funding for Prairie View Golf Links, close the course, and move forward with plans to sell or auction off equipment. The motion also included putting together a committee that included council members to determine the best usage of the course, with emphasis on water quality. During a special meeting work session in late October, the council decided not to appropriate funds for Prairie View Golf Links for the fiscal year 2016, but no formal action was taken. Monday night, city staff requested formal action take place so that funds would not be budgeted or appropriated for 2016.

December 31 news

WORTHINGTON - In observance of New Year’s Day, all city, county and state government offices will be closed Friday, including the law enforcement center at Prairie Justice Center. The Worthington Post Office will be closed, delivery routes will not be running, and there will be no outgoing mail.

The Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce will be closed, as will the Municipal Liquor Store. The Nobles County Library will be closed Friday, and will close at 5 p.m. today.
