WORTHINGTON – A group of people gathered at Worthington City Hall Monday to witness the swearing in of two new Worthington Police officers – one new face and one that is familiar to many.

Jacob Refsland and Dustin Roemeling were sworn in and had badges pinned on by family members. Roemeling is badge number #110 and Refsland #126.

Trial: Josue Fraga

Roughly one month away from the beginning of the third trial of Josue Fraga, motions and discovery requests are being filed, hearings are taking place and the details are being handled before jury selection takes place in Lyon County presided over by Judge Leland Bush.

Fraga is accused of murdering his 2-year-old niece Samantha in March 2008 in the city of Worthington. He has twice been convicted of the murder – declared guilty by a jury in Nobles County District Court. The trial is scheduled to begin January 19.

Death Investigation: Janette Pigman-Kruse

Janette Pigman-Kruse’s death has been ruled a homicide by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner, according to Nobles County Sheriff Kent Wilkening. A Go Fund Me page has been started to help the family. It can be found at gofundme.com under Jan Pigman-Kruse Memorial Fund.

Death Investigation: Travis Svalland

Wednesday afternoon at 3:38 p.m., Cottonwood County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a deceased male at 46306 County Road 3, seven miles north of Windom and about three miles west of Highway 71. The Ramsey County medical examiner has determined the victim as 43-year-old Travis Stanly Svalland of Windom.

An autopsy determined that Svalland died of homicide due to a gunshot wound.

WORTHINGTON – It may seem like it took a long time for winter to show up this year, but now that it finally has, Winterfest is right around the corner. With Winterfest comes the big medallion hunt, crowning of the Winterfest Queen, Princess and new this year, a Winterfest Prince, pond hockey, the SW MN Ice Fishing Tournament and of course, the 2016 Winterfest Chili Cook-Off.

Now in its third year, the chili cook-off is the Friday evening of Winterfest, January 22, and will be at the Worthington Event Center this year. It is the kick-off to the opening ceremonies for Winterfest, and open to anyone.
